The Mayflower Pub – Rotherhithe Village

The best thing after a night out painting the town red, is a late lunch of a large portion of pub comfort food with some good friends.

This particular day, Jean, Chris, a couple friends and I went to The Mayflower Pub, which they recently discovered. It is tucked away off the cobbled roads of Rotherhithe Village and has a very warm and homely feel to it. It has claimed to be the oldest pub on the River Thames and definitely looks like it has a lot of history. There is an large open stone fireplace that is constantly burning wood in the winter season, a grand moose head on one of the walls, and grand french doors that open up to the large decking area right on the river. They even provide hot water bottles and blankets for the winter!

As well as atmosphere, the food is also great. They have an everyday menu and then a specials board which is constantly changing. Its the perfect pub grub with a touch of je ne sais quoi.

I could have eaten everything on the menu. Chris highly recommended the sausage and mash, so that’s what I ordered.

It came with steamed vegetables at the bottom, covered with mashed potatoes, and topped with a slice of black pudding, and three juicy, well seasoned pork sausages. All of it covered in an onion gravy.

After a little break from the very large portions, we ended the meal with a cheese board. They have a good selection of British cheeses and it was a social way to end the meal as we tried them all.

It is well priced at £8 a main meal on average.

Coq D’Argent

For our last catch up dinner, Kuda, Hayley, Jean and I went to Coq D’Argent. Based in the heart of the City, with a stunning roof top terrace, its a Contemporary French Restaurant.

The service was brilliant from start to end and we had a lovely sommelier to help with our choice of wine. As we waiting for our food to come, the waiter brought some warm bread rolls, crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside, with some butter.

For starters I had a beef carpaccio, which was sprinkled with fresh vegetables and had horse radish drizzled around the plate. It was very refreshing and the flavours went very well together.

Kuda and Hayley opted for the mushroom parfait.

And Jean went for the watercress soup which came with a slow cooked egg.

For mains Jean and I got the grilled sea bass, which was cooked to perfection and just melted in your mouth. The fillets were laid on a bed of roasted vegetables which were drenched in a rich, buttery sauce.

Finally for the dessert. It was difficult not to go for the cheese board, as we were sitting by the cheeses and they all looked so tempting, but as we were all feeling pleasantly full, we went for a couple of light desserts instead.

Hayley and I went for the poached pear which was a great pallet cleaner. It came in a pool of mulled wine and some vanilla ice cream.

Jean and Kuda got the cream brulee, which came out with a perfectly caramelised top and two mini madeleines on the side.

Overall a fabulous meal, and as always, a lovely catch up with great girlfriends.

Fortnum and Mason’s Ice Cream Parlour

Lazy Sunday Afternoon

As a birthday treat, Renata took me to Fortnum and Mason’s Ice Cream Parlour. It takes you back to being a kid and how magical the world looked when you entered a sweet shop. The menu is filled with concoctions of mouthwatering ice cream desserts. We decided on a Lazy Sunday Afternoon (above) and a Knickerbocker Glory (below).

It feels like you’re at Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory when the ice cream comes to the table. Brought over on a silver plate in a large, grand ice cream glass overflowing with goodness.

Fun fact: Fortnum and Mason was originally founded in 1707 by William Fortnum and Hugh Mason as a high end grocery store. They were the first store to stock H.J. Heinz’s tinned baked beans.
